DIY installation planning for custom building products

How capable DIY customers and owner-builders can plan measurements, access, tools, tolerances and licensed-trade boundaries before ordering.

DIY supply does not mean every product should be installed without professional help. The best approach is to decide early which work you can complete competently, which work requires licensed trades and what information the factory package must provide.

01

Assess the task before selecting the product

Large glass, structural barriers, external openings and automated gates carry different risks from modular wardrobes or decorative panels. Consider weight, access, height, weatherproofing, electrical work and consequences of incorrect installation.

  • Component size and lifting weight
  • Work-at-height requirements
  • Structural or waterproofing interfaces
  • Electrical, glazing or certification needs
02

Measure the finished condition

Custom products need clear rules for tolerances. Measure multiple points, check level, plumb and square, and identify skirtings, tiles, handles or other obstructions. Record whether dimensions are structural, lined or fully finished.

  • Width at top, middle and bottom
  • Height at multiple locations
  • Diagonal checks for square
  • Finished floor and wall build-ups
03

Plan access, assembly and fixing

A component that fits the opening may not fit through the house. Review delivery path, turning space, stairs, panel lengths, storage and assembly sequence before approving package sizes.

  • Delivery and internal access route
  • Safe storage before installation
  • Substrate and fixing type
  • Required tools, packers, sealants and lifting aids
04

Use licensed or experienced trades where required

Local regulations and safe practice may require qualified installers, electricians, glaziers, engineers or certifiers. Site Ready Direct can identify coordination questions, but customers remain responsible for arranging appropriate local services.

  • Electrical and automation connection
  • Safety glazing and heavy glass handling
  • Structural barriers and fixings
  • Waterproofing and external weather sealing

COMMON QUESTIONS

Quick answers.

Which products are most suitable for capable DIY assembly?+

Suitability depends on design and experience, but labelled modular storage, selected screens and simpler panel systems may be more approachable than structural, glazed or weatherproof products.

Do products include installation instructions?+

Available assembly or installation information is included where stated in the quotation, but it does not replace project-specific trade knowledge or regulatory requirements.

Can my builder install the products?+

Yes, provided the builder accepts the scope and has the appropriate capability, information and licensed trades for the work involved.
